Tables - Section 6 (of 6)
There are two types of tables used in web pages:
- Data tables; and
- Layout tables.
Only the design of data tables should concern you directly although it will also be important to know about the use of tables for layout.
In general, data tables require more careful design (and subsequent coding) to ensure accessibility and long, complex data tables should be avoided as they are difficult for everyone (and difficult to code correctly).
For layout, you should ask the developer to use cascading style sheets (css) instead of tables. If this is not possible, ask them to use as simple a layout structure as is possible with your design - you can help here by making your design structured and simple.
In this section:
- DES 6.1 - Sata tables: Simplify and mark up with special HTML
- DES 6.2 - Layout tables: Ensure correct readout order, avoid complicated nesting, describe with summary attribute
Simplicity is the key - a simple table is easier to interpret (and also easier for developers to code).
