IDI Graduate Awards 2024: Universal Design Category Winner

The IDI Graduate Awards took place in Belfast School of Art on Thursday the 24th of October 2024. The winner of the Universal Design Category was Droplet, by Robert Casey at the University of Limerick

This project redesigned a volume control beaker that helps to manage liquid intake, improving coordination and independence while reducing choking risk.

It is evident that the designer was aware of the stigmatisation that some users experience from using other options available on the market. Their modern and sleek design makes this cup more appealing to users and reduces the stigmatisation that they might feel. 

IDI Graduate Awards 2023: Universal Design Category Winner

The IDI Graduate Awards took place in Belfast School of Art on Thursday the 19th October 2023. The winner of the Universal Design Category was Artafact – Elevating Paper Creativity by Lisa Moran at South East Technological University.

Artafact is a digital drawing board for paper-based creative work. The product aims to minimise the instances and duration of breaks in creative flow states when working with paper-based media.

It is evident that user research had a significant impact on this design, including consideration of neurodiverse users. This entry clearly demonstrated how it achieved the Universal Design Guidelines to align with the Principles of Universal Design, through its core styling as well as detailed design features.

IDI Graduate Awards 2022: Universal Design Category Winner

The IDI Graduate Awards took place in TU Dublin, Grangegorman on Thursday the 20th October 2022. The winner of the Universal Design Category was IO Repair Driven Learning by Matthew Patterson at University of Limerick.

IO (Input Output) Repair Driven Learning is a modular tablet system designed to teach children repair fundamentals. It introduces kids to processes and materials that go into creating a tablet and incentivises them to repair it.

IO Repair Driven Learning was awarded the Universal Design award as the entry factored in and aligned with several of the Principles of Universal Design. By designing its product for children it can be used by a diverse range of people.
