How Walkable is Your Town?’ is a report by Age Friendly Ireland and the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at the National Disability Authority on the results of Walkability Audits in 2014.
We worked with Age Friendly Ireland on Walkability Audits, to inform the development of an effective audit tool for Irish roads and streets. The audits were carried out as part of the 2014 Age Friendly Town Programme, using a Universal Design approach.
Good design of roads and streets in our towns and cities is key to ensuring that people can get out and about in their local area and participate in all their community has to offer. The walkability audits in eight Irish towns and urban centres in 2014, which are the focus of the report, demonstrate the benefit of a focus on universal design, in auditing how easy it is to get around with ease and find your way using roads and streets in urban centres.
We used the data collected and experience gained from the process to inform its advice to the National Transport Authority, on the development of a Universal Design Walkability Audit Tool for roads and streets.
