Bus stop By-pass design - Online Webinar
2:30pm - 29th June 2023
5:30pm - 29th June 2023
The Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at the National Disability Authority are working with AccessibleEU to deliver a workshop on 29th June looking at accessibility of active travel infrastructure, focussing on an examination of bus stop by-passes (otherwise called ‘floating’ or ‘island’ bus stops). AccessibleEU is one of the flagship initiatives proposed in the European Commission’s Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030. It is a resource centre on accessibility, working on the areas of built environment, transport, information, communication technologies and policies in order to ensure persons with disabilities’ participation in all areas of life on an equal basis with others.
Bus stop by-passes have been rolled out in a number of jurisdictions as a way of incorporating more cycling friendly infrastructure into the built environment. However, the design of these bus stops creates a necessity for pedestrians to cross the cycle track in order to access the bus stop. This is creating a shared space between pedestrians and cyclists and raises significant safety concern for pedestrians, particularly disabled people, older people and children who may not be able to assess all risks and may need more time to cross.
Prior to this webinar event, participants will be provided with further information about current designs of these bus stops, as well as some retrofitting solutions available which may assist with safer crossings.
Participants will be encouraged to provide feedback on current designs, solutions available, and personal and professional experiences from Ireland and abroad.
